Are Pests Hiding in Your Holiday Decorations? What Cypress Homeowners Should Know

Pulling holiday decorations out of the garage or attic is one of those signs that the season has officially arrived. You open boxes untouched for months, unpack lights and decorations, and start getting your home ready for the holidays.

Unfortunately, you may not be the only one using those boxes.

Stored decorations, cardboard boxes, artificial trees, wreaths, and other seasonal items can provide quiet hiding places for pests. In Cypress and the greater Houston area, mild fall and winter temperatures mean pest activity does not necessarily disappear when summer ends.

Before bringing your holiday decorations into the living room, take a few precautions to make sure unwanted guests don't come inside with them.

Why Stored Holiday Decorations Can Attract Pests

Think about where holiday decorations spend most of the year. They are often tucked away in garages, attics, sheds, closets, or other areas that receive very little regular activity.

For pests looking for shelter, those spaces can be appealing. Cardboard boxes provide dark, protected areas where insects can hide, while cluttered storage spaces offer plenty of places for pests to go unnoticed.

Spiders may build webs around boxes that are rarely moved. Cockroaches can hide in small gaps and dark spaces. Other insects may find their way into containers that are not completely sealed.

By the time you pull everything out for the holidays, pests may have been living nearby for months.

Inspect Decorations Before Bringing Them Inside

One of the easiest ways to reduce the chance of bringing pests into your home is to inspect decorations before carrying them into your main living areas.

If possible, unpack boxes in the garage, on a patio, or in another area where you can easily see what is inside. Check the bottoms and corners of boxes, and inspect folds in fabric decorations, wreaths, artificial greenery, tree skirts, and other items that can hide insects.

Watch for signs such as webbing, droppings, shed insect skins, damaged cardboard, or live pests.

A quick shake and outside inspection can save you from discovering a pest problem after everything has already been brought indoors.

Be Careful With Cardboard Storage Boxes

Cardboard boxes are convenient, but they are not always the best choice for long-term storage.

They can deteriorate over time, develop openings, and provide pests with plenty of cracks and folds to hide inside. Cardboard can also absorb moisture, which may make a storage area more attractive to certain pests.

Consider replacing old cardboard boxes with sturdy plastic containers that have secure lids. Clear containers can make it easier to see what is inside without opening every box, and tightly fitting lids provide an additional barrier against pests.

When the holidays are over, make sure decorations are clean and dry before storing them again.

Check Live Greenery Before It Comes Indoors

Live Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, and other natural decorations can bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home. Occasionally, that can include insects that were already living on the greenery.

Before bringing live greenery inside, inspect branches and trunks for insects, webs, egg sacs, or other unusual activity. Shaking greenery outdoors can help dislodge insects hiding among the branches.

Finding a few insects on outdoor greenery does not necessarily mean your home has a pest infestation. However, inspecting natural decorations before bringing them indoors can help prevent avoidable surprises.

Do Not Forget About Holiday Deliveries

Holiday shopping can also bring a steady stream of cardboard boxes to your door.

Packages may sit in warehouses, trucks, loading areas, and on porches before they reach your home. Instead of letting shipping boxes pile up indoors, unpack deliveries and dispose of unwanted cardboard promptly.

This is especially important if you plan to store boxes in a garage, pantry, closet, or other area for an extended period.

Keeping unnecessary clutter to a minimum gives pests fewer places to hide.

Pay Attention to Your Garage and Attic

If you notice pests while pulling decorations from storage, don't assume the problem is limited to one box.

Finding repeated pest activity may indicate that pests are living in the garage, attic, storage room, or another part of the property.

Look around the surrounding area for additional signs of activity. Gaps around doors, cracks, damaged weather stripping, openings around utility lines, and other access points may allow pests to move into storage areas.

Addressing the source of the problem is more effective than simply removing the pests you happen to find in a decoration box.

Pest Prevention Does Not End When Summer Does

It is easy to associate pest control with the warmer months, but Cypress homeowners can encounter pest problems year-round. Cooler weather may change which pests you notice and where you find them, but it does not mean your home is automatically protected.

Seasonal routines such as unpacking decorations, moving stored items, receiving packages, and spending more time indoors can reveal pest activity that's easy to overlook.

A little prevention can go a long way. Inspect stored items, reduce clutter, use secure storage containers, and pay attention to signs of pest activity around your home.
